The Return and Recovery Program
The Return and Recovery Program for Military Veterans of Artists for the Humanities is in place to assist members of our armed forces and their families deal with the grief and/or trauma they have experienced because of their combat experiences.
The RRPMV was established in June 2009 and holds group sessions in local community settings as well as on-site at Veterans Administration locations in Northeast and Central Wisconsin.
The program was begun to provide a proven and an effective alternative approach (expressive arts therapy + counseling) to address the needs of veterans returning to civilian life following the adverse effects of military service. The Return and Recovery Program for Military Veterans utilizes the expressive arts and counseling as a means for the affected veteran to come to terms with their past and the military events affecting them. Art therapy is an alternative approach that has been well-documented as an effective approach to individuals dealing with traumatic events.
AFTH services are free to all veterans and their family members. Any veteran who has received a diagnosis of military service-related stress or depression disturbance from a clinician at the Veterans Administration (or other private health care provider) can be referred to one of the programs offered by RRPMV. Our services are also provided to VA health care providers and facilities at no cost.
U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R. WI), reviews the expressive artwork from veteran's of the Return and Recovery programs. President and Executive Director of A4TH, Tim Mayer, explains to the honorable senator from Wisconsin of the importance of the Return and Recovery Program for Military Veterans, at the recent American Legion State of Wisconsin Convention.
